Should I worry about scary intrusive thoughts?
Are you in the postpartum period and having intrusive thoughts? What are intrusive thoughts?
Intrusive thoughts are when we experience upsetting images. In particular, a woman with a new baby in the postpartum period can experience very upsetting images in relation to her baby being hurt. She may even feel so upset, that she avoids certain activities in an effort to protect her baby. Such as not giving her baby a bath, not going down the stairs and staying away from sharp objects. 80% to 100% of BOTH new moms AND dads can experience intrusive thoughts during this time!
I am experiencing this! What now?
Therapy and medication can be very helpful to support a mother during this time and to decrease these thoughts. Intrusive thoughts can be a form of anxiety, and it doesn’t mean you are a danger to your baby. This is often my first intervention with a mother and can bring a sense of relief to her.
Sometimes intrusive thoughts can be part of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Treatment for OCD consists of things like cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. Sometimes once moms know this can be just a form of anxiety, their intrusive thoughts significantly decrease. However, it’s specific to each mom!
If you are experiencing these symptoms, you are not alone! Please reach out to a therapist if this is you.
